WORK

Who still performs the work?

The question is no longer what AI can do. The question is what society will still choose to reserve for humans.

Historical sequence / emerging sequence

Historically

MACHINE BECOMES CAPABLE
→ MACHINE ENTERS WORK

Emerging

AI BECOMES CAPABLE
→ SOCIETY EVALUATES PERMISSION
→ AUTOMATE / SUPERVISE / RESERVE

Three possible work states

  • AUTOMATABLE

AI can perform the work and no structural reason has yet emerged to require human involvement.

  • SUPERVISED

AI performs substantial work but a human remains responsible for approval, intervention, exception handling, or accountability.

  • HUMAN RESERVED

The work remains human not because AI lacks capability, but because human participation itself is considered valuable or necessary.

Capability / permission

Technical capability

Can the AI do it?

Social permission

Should the AI be allowed?

These are not the same question.

Observed fact

Gap

Interpretation

SOURCE / INTERPRETATION / HYPOTHESIS

SOURCE

Bill Gates, 26 August 2026, names Human Reserved as a possible domain of work kept for people, analogized to a nature reserve. He does not present it as enacted law.

INTERPRETATION

Employment observation shifts from replacement forecasting to permission classification. Job-loss statistics are not fabricated here.

HYPOTHESIS

If capability continues to detach from permission, hiring systems may need to name reserved work rather than only remaining work.

Primary evidence: Bill Gates / Gates Notes

Unresolved question

If technological capability no longer determines who performs work, what will?
